Decorating For The Holidays When Selling Your House

Decorating For The Holidays When Selling Your House

If you are selling your home during this holiday season you may be wondering whether or not you should decorate it. Houses may show better when they’re decorated for the holiday season, but there are some things you need to consider before decorating. You may have potential buyers requesting walkthroughs and maybe have an open house or two which means you need to about more than just your personal style or taste when bringing out festive decorations.

Don’t Over Do It

Decorations can easily become clutter so stick to just a few simple festive touches. You want buyers to see past the decorations and  fall in love with your home, not your decorations. A good rule to follow is that if you are adding some decorations, remove some everyday items. So if you have a tree for Christmas, pack up your end table or extra chair nearby. Getting rid of clutter, unnecessary furniture and keeping just a few simple decor pieces makes your home appear bigger and better and not loaded with clutter.

Keep It Neutral & Natural

Even in a very multicultural region the best rule of thumb is to keep holiday decorations neutral and appealing to everyone. An excess of religious decorations can make buyers feel unwelcome in your home and you want them to be able to picture themselves living in your home. Maybe opt for natural holiday decorations instead, they are a great choice because they aren’t overtly religious and they add a subtle yet sophisticated style. For fall choose pumpkins, gourds, colored leaves and pinecones. For winter decorate with fresh evergreen wreathes, berries, rosemary branches and lights.

Decorate With A Holiday Treat

It is not exactly decorating tip but more of a great way to show off holiday cheer and entice buyers during the holiday season. Try making a holiday treat to pass out at your open house. It will make your home smell great, feel warm and comforting and it will be a big hit with buyers. You could serve hot apple cider, pumpkin bread or holiday cookies. A big pot of simmer spices or fresh baked cookies will make your home smell irresistible. It’s these kinds of real scents, not fake ones, that will make buyers feel at home.

Don’t Try To Hide Flaws

Fix flaws, don’t cover them up. And don’t try to hide cracks or water stains with decorations. Serious buyers will be looking closely and they will lose trust in you if they spot something you've tried to hide. This is actually good advice no matter what the season, presenting your home the right way is as crucial as marketing your home. Work with an Exit West agent, like me, for more ideas, advice and expert knowledge about selling your El Paso area home. Search for an Exit West Realty agent online or reach out and we’ll match you with an area specialist near you.
