Socorro ISD’s $35M worth of LEED Gold

EL PASO - Socorro Independent School District has started construction on a $35.3 million, 237,000-sf kindergarten through eighth grade facility that is expected to be El Paso’s first LEED-Gold certified school.

The school, situated on 35 acres at 14251 Ralph Seitsinger will feature wind turbines, classrooms equipped with Wi-Fi and smart boards, several rainwater retention basins and a 10,000-gallon water-harvesting tank to keep most storm water from leaving the site.

The new gymnasium’s floors will be made from an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional wood called “ply-boo.”

Nearly 800 elementary and 1,200 middle school students are expected to enroll at the school, which is expected to be completed by Aug. 2014.
