El Pasoans still have the lowest average prices among major cities in Texas as gasoline prices continue to rise across the nation, according to AAA's Weekend Gas Watch. El Pasoans are paying an average of $3.28 per gallon of unleaded regular, a 7-cent increase in the past week. The statewide average rose 4 cents to $3.53, which is 18 cents below the national average, $3.71. Drivers in Austin, Dallas and Houston are paying the highest prices among major cities in the state at $3.54. Analysts say relief will come after the Labor Day holiday when the summer travel season ends and refineries make the transition back to less expensive fuel blends, AAA reported. Geopolitical tensions with Iran and the increased demand from the summer driving season are pushing prices higher nationally, according to AAA. However, not all regions of the country are being hit the same. Texans saw their retail prices increase 20 to 30 cents in the past month, while states like Oregon and California have seen increases of more than 40 cents, according to AAA. Those regional discrepancies have been caused by a refinery fire in northern California and a pipeline rupture in Wisconsin, AAA reported. In New Mexico, Las Cruces motorists are paying an average price of $3.32, up 3 cents in the past week. The New Mexico statewide average is $3.47, up 9 cents in the past week.
