What Does El Paso Art Represent

This blog isn't about an art installation that sits somewhere in an El Paso park or about a specific artist that puts out amazing work. Why not? Well because we can't even get to that point. Some of our city council members feel the need to control artistry and vision. They feel that the art in El Paso should have to say something about El Paso but my question is, How many paintings and sculptures of missions, conquistadors and native americans do we need to tell the history of the city? Does art have to be so literal? Art can also be an interpretation of someone or something as per the imagination of the artist.

Just like a Ramon Renteria (El Paso Times Reporter) said in his story, "No telling what the political wizards end up doing about public art on Alameda. Public officials can deflate or even kill art budgets, wreck public art programs or second-guess the people who know better, but they should not dictate the definition or vision of art. (Respect the existing selection process and butt out.)"
